In the beginning, I was apprehensive about taking a Review of Wayne Gretzky.

Gretzky’s credentials are unquestionable, but being a great athlete doesn’t necessarily make you a great teacher, especially when it comes to a subject like a mindset, which many athletes take for granted.

What Is MasterClass?

What Is MasterClass

MasterClass is an online learning platform that offers courses in a wide variety of topics and is taught by renowned professionals in those fields.

Over one hundred celebrity instructors from all over the world are featured in the site’s currently available courses. These instructors include names like Simone Biles, Tony Hawk, Stephen Curry, and Serena Williams, among many others.

As someone who has participated in a number of MasterClass courses itself, I can attest to the fact that many of them are excellent and provide a profound education on the topics covered.

Having said that, some are superior to others; therefore, it is essential to conduct a preliminary study in order to ensure that the educational path you select is the most suitable option for you.

Course Overview – Wayne Gretzky Masterclass Review

The following are some of the topics covered in Wayne Gretzky’s MasterClass:

  • There are 19 video lessons in all, with a combined runtime of 2 hours, 7 minutes (average lesson length is about 6 minutes)
  • There are summaries of Gretzky’s career stages and lessons to be learned in a 21-page workbook.

Overall, Gretzky’s course recaps his career, from his childhood and how he got into hockey to his retirement and post-hockey career. Gretzky explains how his decisions lead to his success and offers to advice for others.

I’ve divided the course into four sessions for this review:

  • Early Gretzky
  • NHL-playing
  • Champion Wayne
  • Gretzky’s post-hockey reflections

Session 01 – Gretzky’s younger years

In the first 7 courses, Gretzky talks about shooting pucks in his backyard at age 4 and how his enthusiasm for hockey blossomed.

Gretzky gives a charming sit-down conversation about his childhood, mixed with visuals and film of a young Gretzky practicing and competing.

It’s a beautiful segment that shows how Gretzky’s childhood shaped him into an athlete superstar. Gretzky gives advice at the end of each of his stories.

  • This segment teaches:
  • Passion discovery
  • Why pricey gear isn’t necessary
  • What an inspiring idol is
  • Playing above your ability
  • Structure vs. Creativity
  • Decision-making advice

Session 02 – Playing In The NHL

Students will learn about Wayne Gretzky’s early years in the National Hockey League, including the time he spent with the Indianapolis Racers before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers, as well as his development as a player throughout that time period.

We’re back with more of Gretzky’s early games from the WHA and NHL, this time is interwoven with playback footage from his sit-down talks.

What you’ll discover in this part is:

  • The best way to set realistic objectives
  • Professionalism is critical.
  • What to do if you’re lost?
  • You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, and what that entails.
  • Defining characteristics of a winning squad

Session 03 – Wayne’s championship reign

In lesson 13, we cover Gretzky’s repeated Stanley cup victories with the Edmonton Oilers, his sad departure to join the Los Angeles Kings, and the Kings’ rise to Stanley cup contenders.

Gretzky’s ideas grow less relevant to the typical sportsman as the stories become less entertaining. Most of the advice is on how to act as a world champion, which is interesting but not applicable to most viewers.

This is the course’s highlight for hockey lovers. Gretzky narrates anecdotes about his career achievements and gets viewers as enthusiastic as he does.

Not the most relevant, but great for fans.

You’ll learn:

  • The secret to having the mentality of a champion
  • Reasons why you should never rest on your previous accomplishments
  • Anticipating that which is unanticipated
  • The key to gaining the respect of your contemporaries

Session 04 – Gretzky post-hockey and closing thoughts

The course comes to a close with a discussion of Wayne Gretzky’s retirement from the National Hockey League (NHL) and his post-hockey endeavors, including the Gretzky Hockey School.

This is a summer camp for children in the United States and Canada that teaches (what else?) the fundamentals of ice hockey and organizes youth competitions.

In the following section, you will learn:

  • How maintaining a healthy lifestyle can add years to your career as an athlete
  • How to put your words into action
  • The significance of keeping a positive attitude and moving on

Pros & Cons – Wayne Gretzky Masterclass Review

Pros & Cons - Wayne Gretzky Masterclass Review

PROS

01 – A captivating and enthusiastic speaker

Gretzky, as I’ve already stated, is an excellent speaker who does an excellent job of engrossing and exciting his story.

Even when Gretzky talks about the lessons to be learned from his stories, the course has an informal and conversational tone that sometimes shifts into seriousness.

Some viewers may be thrown off by the conversational tone of the course, especially those who were looking for a more academic/sports psychology-style course.

When you hear Gretzky speak, you feel as if you’re sitting across from him rather than on a teleprompter.

02 – Unique insight into the man himself

Apart from supposedly “teaching the athlete’s mindset,” it appears that the primary goal of this course is to provide Gretzky with a platform to open up about his climb to prominence and provide insight into his hardships and triumphs. The course is unrivaled in this regard.

He has a lot of leeway with MasterClass, and the result is a succession of emotionally riveting tales that you can see he’s delighted to tell.

Instead of focusing solely on Gretzky’s greatest achievements, the MasterClass focuses on his personal life, including his father’s connection with him, his friendship with Gordie Howe, and his interest in other sports, especially baseball.

By devoting time to these topics, the spectator has a deeper understanding of Wayne Gretzky’s character and a stronger sense of connection to the speaker.

03 – Excellent production values and memorable video

This course meets the high standards set by MasterClass for online learning production quality. In order to give the course a professional appearance, every aspect of the production was carefully considered and executed.

Many of Gretzky’s experiences are brought to life with the use of appropriate footage used throughout the film.

It features not just game footage from some of Gretzky’s most memorable bouts, but also home recordings from his youth, which are likely to bring back fond memories for anyone who grew up with VHS tapes.

CONS

01 – Lack of technical content

The lack of technical information was, without a question, the most disappointing aspect of this MasterClass. However, although the course covers some ground, the amount of practical guidance provided is disappointingly low, especially considering the price tag.

If you’re more interested in learning about Wayne Gretzky than sports psychology, the emphasis on Gretzky’s tale will be a bonus.

While many of the lessons may appear elementary, they might be helpful for new or young athletes who have no prior experience.

There is no shortage of wisdom from Gretzky, but those who are already intermediate or advanced athletes may be frustrated to learn only that “work very hard and learn from your mistakes.”

02 – Perhaps a little too specific

For ice hockey players, Gretzky’s MasterClass is most relevant, although it does offer some valuable advice for athletes who want to pursue a career in team sports, such as his thoughts on player trade.

As a result, some of the lessons may not be applicable to those who participate in less team-oriented sports. For example, lesson 12 focuses on how to establish a championship sports team, which is fantastic for an aspiring NHL squad, but less valuable for an aspiring boxing champion.

03 – The workbook is a little short

Although the workbook is visually appealing and user-friendly, it doesn’t add much to the course. Although Gretzky’s anecdotes are well-written, it’s preferable to hear them straight from the man himself rather than read about them.

There’s not a lot of material to work with in terms of making a workbook in this course because it’s more like an interview. Furthermore, the MasterClass team deserves praise for the engaging graphic design and well-written articles.

It would have been better if the workbook had been used to expand on the content covered in the classes rather than simply repeating it. If, for example, Gretzky’s advice could be used in a practical way, it could be worthwhile to read through the material.

As it stands, it’s essentially a paper version of the video course information that’s a lot less enjoyable to read.

Who Should Take This Course?

Although I thoroughly loved this course, it is crucial to ensure that the course content lines up with what you are searching for.

Gretzky provides a wealth of information on how to cultivate a positive mindset, but it’s evident that the most important part of this book is gaining a glimpse into Gretzky’s personality as a hockey player.

The Wayne Gretzky MasterClass, in my perspective, is for:

  • Athletes that are new to mental training and are interested in learning more about it.
  • Fans that are curious about the Champion’s mentality.
  • Competitors want a course that will spur them on to the greater effort.
  • Ice hockey fans who wish to understand more about what it’s like to be a hockey player
  • Athletes who are interested in learning more about the life and times of Wayne Gretzky

MasterClass Alternatives – Wayne Gretzky Masterclass Review

In addition to Lewis Hamilton’s session on winning attitude, MasterClass also offers a program on how to become a champion.

To tell you the truth, there are no other classes like MasterClass! The vast majority of the other classes are likewise offered through online platforms, and each one is designed to teach students at the college level on a specific topic of their choosing.

However, masterclasses are more interesting and stimulating on all fronts to a greater extent. The majority of the classes are pretty brief, and their duration is rather brief as well,

but the teachers are incredible, and many of them are acknowledged authorities in their disciplines. The following is a list of alternatives to MasterClass that you might want to consider:

MasterClass VS Udemy

Another online portal, Udemy, offers more than a million online courses, many of which are discounted frequently. While MasterClass has a limited amount of courses, varying pricing, and no ability to construct your own course, it is still a viable option.

However, compared to MasterClass, Udemy’s courses are more pricey. There is also no guarantee that the creators of the course are presenting you with the precise knowledge that is valuable to you! MasterClass fills in for you in this situation!

You know precisely what you’re getting in the masterclass! In the world of music and the soul of music, for example, legends abound! Having them at your side will allow you to learn everything from the depths of your spirit.

MasterClass VS CreativeLive

CreativeLife is an alternative to masterclasses that can be found online. MasterClass and CreativeLife, on the other hand, are both online courses that provide members or users with access to professional experience.

But now for the real distinction! In other words, MasterClass is open to everyone interested in developing their artistic abilities in a number of mediums.

However, CreativeLife is primarily intended for photographers, bloggers, and other digital media enthusiasts.

The MasterClass program, on the other hand, is the perfect option for anyone interested in learning about a wide range of topics such as music or writing or comedy or graphic design or food.

How Unique Is The Course Content?

It’s both and neither.

We get to hear Gretzky in an informal, conversational setting thanks to the interview component of the course. You get the sense that Gretzky is presenting these stories the way he wants them to be told in this interview, which sets it unique from many other sports interviews.

However, the course’s approach to instruction is unfortunately not unique. Many of the principles addressed in this course are commonplace in motivating speeches, as previously mentioned.

Inexperienced athletes may still benefit from the advice given, although it may not be clear to a complete novice, as I’ve discovered while coaching myself.

Despite the fact that much of the content in this course can be obtained on YouTube, MasterClass offers a specially selected curriculum that concentrates on the teachings that Wayne Gretzky considers to be the most significant.

By enrolling in this course, you may save yourself a lot of time scrolling through YouTube and other video-sharing websites in search of the most relevant content.

Wayne Gretzky Masterclass Review – Is It Worth It?

It all comes down to context.

Allow me to elaborate. It was a pleasure to watch this course because of the high quality of the material. Nevertheless, you must first know the consequences of your actions.

This MasterClass isn’t for intermediate or advanced athletes who want to learn how to enhance their mental approach to training. There are a lot of interesting topics covered in the course, but there isn’t enough technical information in any of them to make it worthwhile for an athlete.

When it comes to learning how to improve your thinking, this course is an excellent resource for beginners.

In addition, if you’re a Gretzky or ice hockey lover, you should give it a shot. Gretzky is a great storyteller, and he has a lot of heartwarming tales to share about one of hockey’s greatest moments.

In addition, if you purchase an all-access pass, you’ll have access to more than 100 other high-quality courses after this one. As well as other sporting legends like Steph Curry, Simone Biles, and Alex Honnold & Tommy Caldwell, who teach classes.
