This article on “What Is Masterclass” will provide you with the opportunity to read an in-depth evaluation of Bill Nye’s Masterclass, including information on how the lessons are presented, who the course is best suited for, the cost, and what I liked about it, etc.
Masterclass is an online education platform for creative professionals situated in San Francisco. Of course, you are under no obligation to attend a Masterclass in San Francisco.
On-the-go learning is made easy with Masterclass courses that can be accessed from a computer or mobile device. Get started right now by logging into the online course.
It’s the: that makes MasterClass stand out from other online education options.
- The quality of its teachers and their achievements
- Production values worthy of a movie
- Intimacy fostered between instructor and student through the use of story-telling
- And there’s the opportunity to split the cost of membership with family and friends.
- And based on the facts, it appears to be a formula that works.
Investors have pumped over half a billion dollars into MasterClass, For example, since its start in 2015. Moreover, the company is expected to go public in 2022.
With MasterClass, you’re paying for the experience of being taught by a celebrity. It’s something no other platform has.
But, in all honesty, some celebrities are much better teachers than others. While the production value and entertainment value of each class are high, not every class taught me a lot. You need to be aware of that. MasterClass isn’t strictly education. It’s “edutainment.”
In addition, Masterclass can be found on Twitter, where it has more than 82,000 followers and where it regularly disseminates interesting and informative content via its account.
How Does MasterClass Work?

Studying for a MasterClass is a breeze. Logging in gives you access to selected courses (those we think you’ll like) under the Discover menu or all of our courses under the Library tab.
To begin, select the course you’d want to take. That’s all there is to it.
The majority of courses feature between 20 and 25 video tutorials. Downloadable materials, such as worksheets and other resources, are also available to assist you in your studies.
You can go at your own pace via the video lessons. Because they are brief, you won’t be overrun by the instructors’ stories and experiences. In contrast to some other educational platforms, you don’t have to spend hours at a time watching videos.
In a normal MasterClass course, you can expect the following:
- The famous teacher teaches via video lessons. Video content in most classes ranges from 2 to 5 hours in length.
- Summary of the most important ideas from each video’s course notes
- Additional sources of information
- A place to record your thoughts and ideas.
- Community involvement. If you’d want to interact with the other students in the class, you can join conversations, post your own work, and connect with them in other ways.
At any given time, you can take as many MasterClasses as you wish. It’s up to you how much time you want to spend learning.
Once you’ve joined up, MasterClass gives you 30 days to explore all of its offerings. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee if you change your mind.
There’s also a lot to discover.
One hundred and fifty-plus MasterClasses are available in eleven categories. There is an instructor’s handbook that may be downloaded for each. Assignments and other supporting information, as well as recommended readings and links to related resources, can be found here.
Among the subjects offered are:
- Food
- Design and Style
- Arts and Entertainment
- Music
- Business
- Sports and Gaming
- Writing
- Home and Lifestyle
- Science and Technology
- Community and Government
- Wellness
Pre-recorded and self-paced, MasterClasses allow you to learn at your own speed. You’re free to come and go as often as you wish. Typically, they are divided into about 20 10-minute lessons, with each instruction lasting an average of about 10 minutes.
Who Are The MasterClass Instructors?

MasterClass teachers include Nobel Prize winners, Emmy and Academy Award winners, musical virtuosos, multiple Michelin star chefs, holders of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and more.
The opportunity to learn from the greatest in the world is indeed provided through MasterClass.
For a sampling, here are a few of the school’s instructors:
- Gordon Ramsay – holder of 16 Michelin stars
- James Cameron – 6x Academy Award winner
- Ringo Starr – Grammy, Academy, and Bafta winner
- St Vincent – Grammy Award winner and guitar icon
- Tom Morello – 2x Grammy Award winner and “The greatest guitarist of all time” (Rolling Stone)
- Chris Hadfield – former commander of the International Space Station, engineer, advocate for science, and one-time singer
- Margaret Atwood – endowed with over 100 awards and honorary degrees

Who Is Masterclass For?
You must be creative to attend this class.
Courses like photography, writing, and filmmaking are among the most popular. Salman Rushdie’s writing lesson is ideal if you want to improve your novel-writing talents.
MasterClass is a terrific resource for those who wish to learn more about the teachers and celebrities featured on the site. Educator-produced documentaries and classroom instruction coexist together in this course.
Many classes (especially those in which students learn to cook or write) excel at keeping the teachings at the forefront of their minds.
Others, such as the art class taught by Jeff Koons, are a toss-up. Others, such as the music production class taught by Alicia Keys, are solely focused on the teacher and offer no guidance for the students. I was not a fan of this course.
MasterClass, on the other hand, is a great place to learn about your teachers and acquire new creative talents if you’re a curious creature.
Who Is MasterClass Not For?
Those in search of recognized education or live instruction should avoid taking a Masterclass.
There are no Q&A sessions or one-on-one lessons available in these classes, which are completely pre-recorded. You won’t be able to speak directly to the teacher.
If you’re looking to use these classes to replace college-level courses, MasterClass isn’t for you. To avoid confusion, these are not accredited programs and should not be taken as such.
MasterClass is also a poor choice for anyone looking to improve their technical or professional skills. If you’re looking to learn how to use Excel, MasterClass isn’t the place for you.
When it comes to boosting your résumé, MasterClass may not be the best option. This course is not for those who aren’t willing to put in the effort to learn new things.
In my opinion, MasterClass is a great way to learn new topics, even if the classes are engaging and some lessons are a delight to watch. A little effort is required for learning as well.
What Are Masterclass Plans & Pricing?

The following is a monthly cost for each of the MasterClass subscriptions:
- Individual $15
- Duo $20
- Family $23
This may look expensive at first, but it’s actually quite reasonable.
Joining with family or friends, on the other hand, can significantly cut your costs. As well as taking as many courses as feasible.
With more than 150 courses available, you’re sure to discover something you like. Individual memberships cost as little as $12 per course, even if just 10% of the courses are of interest to the buyer.
$180 / 15 courses = $12 per year for an individual subscription.
What Is Masterclass Free Trial?

There isn’t a free trial available for MasterClass. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee, however (more on this later).

What Is A MasterClass Lesson Like?
There is a wide range of subjects covered by the more than 150 classes offered. You may expect the following from every MasterClass lesson:.
- We have divided each class into around 20 video courses with a total running time of about 10 minutes each
- An introduction to the lesson’s material as a starting point
- Telling stories as well as teaching students how to carry out real-world tasks
- Supporting images, video clips, case studies, and other evidence are included in this section.
- summaries of the most important points
- A comprehensive downloadable workbook that includes recipes, projects, assignments, supporting information, and other resources.
Workshops are also available for some classes, where you can get one-on-one help from an instructor.
What Is MasterClass For Business?
For businesses, MasterClass offers two options:
- To redeem a one-year subscription, MasterClass provides CSV files with unique gift codes. These are excellent one-time incentives.
- In order for an administrator to add or remove people at any time and monitor participation, a Licence provides an admin panel that supports a more consistent perks strategy.

The Pros And Cons Of MasterClass
Let’s begin by looking at what I liked most about MasterClass.
PROS
- We don’t need to tell you that these professors aren’t slouched. Even when they don’t live up to their reputation, it never feels like a phony performance. It’s a great deal to have so many legends on the same stage demonstrating their skills.
- MasterClass has this as a unique selling point. The videos are of the highest quality. The quality of the filming, lighting, audio, and even the music contribute to the overall enjoyment of the videos. My opinion is that the video quality makes everything more personal and easier to take in, not merely as a spectacle.
- MasterClass has a function like this that is simply amazing. Basically, you’ll get instruction tailored to your own interests. This means that you can jump from one session on finding inspiration by Neil Gaiman to a comparable course on developing narrative ideas by David Baldacci. What’s the most interesting aspect of this? It’s not necessary to take all of the classes in the order they’re listed. Depending on your particular area of interest, you can easily switch between different instructors.
- There are nine broad categories in which the MasterClasses can be found, and within each of these categories are several subclasses. Writing, cooking, music, journalism, acting, and more are all covered in MasterClasses. In addition, new material is being added to Masterclass on a near-weekly basis.
- The MasterClass videos worked exactly as well on my phone as they did on my laptop. The MasterClass mobile app is a fantastic tool that I had no issues with at all.
- The level of difficulty in the classes varies, but everyone (including those with no prior knowledge of the subject topic) can join in and benefit from the instructor’s guidance.
CONS
Here are several aspects of MasterClass that, despite how much I liked it, I didn’t particularly like.
- These aren’t classes that last a whole semester. Probably a few hours of learning time for each one of them in total. As a starting point for your educational journey, they are not a replacement for traditional education.
- It’s up to you how fast or slow you go. They don’t have a set start or end time. As a result, there is no live Q&A or unpredictability in these classes. Every time you attend a class with Ron Howard, you can count on the same experience.
- There is a community called The Hub on MasterClass that allows students to interact with one another and discuss the instructor’s lessons. It’s a good idea in theory. My experience was that the debates were devoid of any real substance. This was the part of MasterClass that I sped through in the blink of an eye.
- The recollections and experiences of the teachers are emphasized in some classes, but the takeaways for students are minimized.
As far as I’m concerned, those are the main drawbacks. Generally speaking, they are excellent classes that will help you build a solid foundation for further study. They don’t go into great detail on each topic.
When it comes to Masterclasses, as long as you understand that you’re not actually getting a college-level class, you’ll probably be fine.
What Could Be Improved?
01 – Courses’ Quality Varies
There will be a wide range of teaching styles and course quality among the platform’s 150+ courses. Being the best at something does not automatically translate into being a great instructor.
Some classes may benefit from more film, animations, visuals, and the like being used to break them up. This is especially true if the instructor lacks energy or speaks in a monotone tone.
These are, however, quite rare. In addition, if you’re a follower of that someone, you’re undoubtedly habituated to their style. As a bonus, the film-style presentation and the method of breaking down the lectures into small portions keep you interested.
As such, rather than being negative in and of itself, this is merely something to keep in mind.
02 – No Certification
When you finish a course at MasterClass, you won’t receive a certificate as you would at Coursera or edX.
The online notes you take in class might help you keep track of how far you’ve come and to reflect on your own learning.
Can MasterClass Be Purchased As A Gift?

The gift option is available on MasterClass. To utilize it, you’ll need the recipient’s email address.
Simply select the Gift option from the MasterClass menu and then click on ‘Add a Gift’.
A basic (individual), Plus (duo), or Premium (family) membership can be given as a present to the recipient.
The recipient of your gift will receive an email from MasterClass with a link to activate their MasterClass account after you make your purchase.
Can I Purchase An Individual MasterClass?
Individual MasterClasses are no longer available for purchase.
Subscriptions are required to access MasterClass anymore. Then again, they do have a 30-day refund policy in place.
If you’re interested in taking classes, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so before you enroll.

What Is MasterClass And Its Alternatives?
The following MasterClass options might be a better fit if you’re searching for a more focused learning experience.
MasterClass Vs Skillshare

Instead of focusing on advanced students, Skillshare caters to newcomers. Skillshare, for example, has hundreds of courses ranging from beginner to expert level in a wide range of subjects, including animation.
Skillshare, on the other hand, doesn’t feel like it offers nearly as much value as MasterClass for $159 per year (in other words, I’d rather pay more for MasterClass to get 10x the value).
MasterClass Vs Udemy

You may get online education at a discount with Udemy. With over 100 high-quality online courses from well-known instructors like Helen Mirren and Samuel L. Jackson, Udemy offers tens of thousands of low-cost courses taught by many unidentified teachers.
Udemy doesn’t offer monthly or yearly memberships if you have time to search for a treasure. Class access is charged on a per-unit basis.
MasterClass Vs Coursera

Courses on Coursera are not taught by celebrities, but by professors from top universities throughout the world. Coursera has an advantage over MasterClass since it offers a more traditional learning experience.
In contrast to this, Coursera focuses on professional users who want to enhance their skills in a specific field by earning a degree or certificate from an accredited institution. It’s much more impressive than saying, “I attended a sales masterclass.”
My Honest MasterClass Review: Is MasterClass Worth It?
All of us are wondering: Is MasterClass worth the money?
The quick answer is, yes, most likely. Whether you want to improve your acting abilities by taking a course taught by Natalie Portman or your writing abilities by listening to a lecture given by Margaret Atwood, the MasterClass online learning platform is sure to have something for you.
However, this isn’t the primary reason MasterClass students sign up. Like the majority of people, I have no idea what I don’t know.
Consequently, the prospect of discovering a topic about which I know nothing and delving into 4 hours of video lectures to gain a thorough understanding excites me.
MasterClass, on the other hand, is best suited to those who are intrigued. Investing in MasterClass’s online courses provides me with seven reasons to do so:
- Learn from some of the greatest teachers in a variety of subjects at the same time
- Learn about interesting topics from the content
- It’s impossible to beat the price.
- Video lessons are used to break down courses into manageable chunks.
- Knowledge is good for your health and happiness.
- Every month, new classes are added.
What Is Masterclass: Is It Worth It?
I would say overall “Yes” to it.
However, it is crucial that you have realistic expectations. An educational website, MasterClass does not offer certification.
In fact, MasterClass offers a wonderful opportunity to learn from world-renowned experts in one’s chosen field. An excellent job has been done by the platform in organizing the wisdom and backstory of its lecturers into courses. Everything is in one spot, and it’s all in breathtakingly high definition.
When it comes to your career and personal life, there are always actionable insights you can use. MasterClass, on the other hand, can’t take you from nil to nil. Start to finish instructions will be given in the more practical classes (food and magic).
Tom Morello and Herbie Hancock are great teachers, but you won’t learn to play guitar or piano in a few hours. Watch some of MasterClass’ YouTube trailers to get a sense of what they’re all about. If you’re a fan of them, MasterClass is a safe bet.
And since you can try out every lesson for free and get a full refund within 30 days of signing up, MasterClass really is a no-risk option.
